The story behind the birth of Leffe

In 1240, the clergy of Lev began brewing beer. At that time, Europe was plagued by plague and safe drinking water was in short supply. The brewing process involved boiling the water, which killed any microorganisms and made it safe to drink. The quality of the water later improved, but beer brewing continues to this day.
After the French Revolution, religious life temporarily stagnated and Löw Abbey was destroyed several times in the early 18th century. In 1902, Norbertine priests from France rebuilt the monastery. In 1929, the monastery at Tongerlo was destroyed by fire and its clergy took refuge in Löw Abbey. After the Tongerlo monastery was rebuilt, some of the clergy became permanent residents of Löw.
In 1952, the abbot of Nis and the brewer Albert Rotvedt decided to revive the monastery's brewing traditions and a range of Leffe beers were developed and made available to beer lovers.
Although Leffe Monastery faced many hardships, it continued to preserve its traditions, and as a result, the taste of the dish is still known today as "Leffe".
